Specialized instruments gently elevate the sinus membrane without creating a large opening in the sinus wall. A carefully selected bone graft material is then placed into the space created beneath the membrane.

 

Lateral-Wall Technique

The lateral-wall technique is recommended when significant bone loss has occurred due to maxillary sinus disease or other sinus conditions, and there is not enough bone height for predictable implant placement.

In this sinus augmentation procedure, a small window is created in the lateral wall of the maxillary sinus. This provides direct visualization of the sinus membrane, allowing it to be carefully elevated away from the sinus floor. The resulting space is filled with a bone graft or sinus graft material to promote new bone growth.

Patients are advised to avoid blowing their nose, forceful sneezing, or heavy lifting during the initial healing phase to protect the sinus membrane and graft material. Antibiotics may be prescribed to reduce the risk of infection, particularly in patients with a history of sinusitis or allergies.

Most patients return to normal daily activities within a few days. However, full bone integration and maturation of the graft typically take several months before final implant restoration can occur if implants were staged.
